'I've never seen him take them on a walk': Tenant takes landlord's doggo out to play daily, only to be blamed by landlord for his dog being underweight because they “exercise her too much”

Dogs need to get exercise. Some more than others, obviously. You can't exercise a pug the same way you would exercise a doberman, simply because of their biology. But, regardless of their breed, all dogs need stimulation in order to live fulfilling lives - and it's our job as owners to make their lives as enjoyable as pawssible. When this dog-loving tenant moved in and noticed his landlord's dogs were understimulated (he only played with them outside for 10 minutes a day), he took it upon himself to help them.

The tenant took them on walks, and even played fetch with them outside. The landlord then threatened him and accused him of "exercising his dogs too much" because his dog was looking a little thin. There are pictures of the gorgeous pupper below, and we think that should could be slightly underweight, but we've never heard of stopping exercise in order to gain weight.     My landlord who is 43 and has 4 dogs, whereas I have 1, so 4 dogs total. One of his dogs, Nisha, is half Lab half Boerboel.

    My landlord kind of has behavioral issues. His parents sent him to some camp when he was 14 until he was 18. Well I guess that didn't work as he did 5 years in state prison.

  • Our friend's sister went to one of those “wilderness treatment programs”. It also didn't really help. She didn't turn out as bad as this landlord, but let's just say that up until her late 20s, she had a difficult life.

    During one of the times he was yelling at me he Imaed me for the fact Nisha's runs are visible. It was just so ridiculous as that's just a part of her Boerboel lineage.

    I think he feels threatened, as ever since I moved in I play with all the dogs in the yard for about an hour a day. I take my dog to the dog park everyday, if not the dog park just a walk. I used to take his dogs with me (not all at once, I would take them on a rotating schedule, and sometimes I'd take 2 at a time as there is a double leash.

    I added some pictures of Nisha cause I wouldn't mind everyone's opinion. I also want to note that my landlord only plays fetch outside with his dogs for 10 minutes a day max. I've never seen him take them on a walk.

    He eventually told me I couldn't take the dogs on walks anymore. When he told me he said, "FOR ONE, I SHOULD BE DOING IT, TWO, IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO THEM IN YOUR CARE, IT WOULD NOT BE A GOOD DAY FOR YOU", to which I replied, "Oh ya? Would you me up?" "IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO MY DOG?! YES I WOULD".

  • We would also advise the tenant to just let go of the situation. You can't save everyone, and they are technically his dogs; he can do whatever he wants with them (we don't have to like it, though). He seems unstable, and you have to protect yourself and your doggo first and foremost.

    she is likely far more fulfilled in your care, but with how volatile he is acting you are better off just being a tenant and avoiding confrontation with him until you can get more secure housing

    not a fully developed dog, then too much exercise would be detrimental to her joints so is growing too fast. Boerbels. could also be more protective less accepting of strangers and outside dogs, negative experiences are more likely to stick with them and the owner may want control over that.

    But for your safety, I suggest leaving the whole thing alone. No more play time or walks with his dog, no comments, just drop it. He will probably figure out that he's the problem when his dog becomes unmanageable and is still skinny.
